On Straw Dogs:
“I think it’s fuckin’ sad,” he says. ”Because Charlie thinks this is not rape. He thinks she wants this: “She belongs with me — this is it, here we are, together forever.’ And that look between them when she’s like, Get off me…It kills him.”
Ultimately, though, the lesson he took from the role was “how crazy love can make you.” He says, “I don’t fall often, but I fall hard. And when you fall hard, it takes a while to get up.”
— Alexander Skarsgard (Men’s Journal (Oct. 2011), Scans: StoreMags.com)
I’m sorry, what? It’s sad for the rapist? I hope he meant sad as in pathetic, but that’s still not right. Abhorrent would be better. Atrocious. Horrific. Something that should never happen. Those would be better things to say, not that you pity him. And the lesson is how crazy love can make you. Because the rapist is a victim of love. Because the rapist is just so in love. No, I don’t think so. I realize he’s your character, but the rapist is not the victim. He’s not a sympathetic character. There is never an excuse for rape.
Guys. If he can’t find a way to sympathize with the character, to rationalize him, to make him seem human, how is he supposed to play him? This is all fictional and theoretical. Were there actual people involved, it would be more black and white.
why so much beef? I agree with above rebuttle. well said procrastinationandsarcasm - however I also agree with statement above as well. it’s a tough position.
OH DEAR GODRIC. Get over it girls. Seriously. I understand what he’s saying, that’s why we’re soul mates obviously.
“it’s sad” as in pathetic and awful because the CHARACTER (who isnt real by the way) doesn’t think of it as rape…which is BAD, because IT IS RAPE and thats BAD… LIKE WERE YOU READING THE SAME SHIT I WAS? fucking christ man, people like to take every fucking thing and make it a fucking issue, he basically said its fucking bad, but the character doesnt think so, get it? fuck.
AND the rest of his statement was obviously taken out of context, this is an interview, he isnt saying that playing a rapist and him falling in love are related things, he is saying that RAPE is a fucking PSYCHOTIC THING and some people are so crazy and think they are in love and think that love and rape are related… OKAY? wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww… i just got so annoyed, lmao sorry everyone
Oh excuse me, I’m so sorry the topic of rape annoys you (I’ll be using “you” to include everyone who thinks he’s just so dreamy and therefore they know exactly what he meant to say … which …. LMFAO). Don’t read this post then, wouldn’t want to upset anyone.
Couple of things.
1) If you continue using the “this is just a movie” argument, people might start to think you don’t know the connection between pop culture and rape culture. Wouldn’t want that, right?
2) This has become less about what he said (because I do believe he probably, hopefully meant something far less offensive but that’s not the point) and more about the fans’ reaction. You think he’s so dreamy that you don’t question a word he’s saying. That’s just depressing. You can’t just assume he didn’t mean it just because his biceps are impressive. That’s so offensive and anti-feminist I want to puke. If SOMEONE had questioned his words instead of going “Awwwwww”, I’m sure neither aclutteredmind nor moi would have been so pissed. Because that worries me too. That people don’t even read the shit he says even when it’s borderline sexist and definitely unreflected. And just straight-up dumb.
3) And don’t put words in his mouth just because you want to sit on his face either. Hot guys aren’t allowed to say asshole things just because you like the way their t-shirts cling to their moobies. You’re setting back feminism 100 years.
Oh look, I feel better. Bring it. Tell me I don’t know him. Tell me he didn’t mean it. Tell me I don’t get him, tell me I’m upset over a dumb movie, tell me I need to get a life. I. Do. Not. Care. Because this is an important topic which women should care about. And no, I don’t think he really meant to trivialize rape (fyi, he does rape her in the movie) but as a responsible man he should have expressed himself differently.
Also, I don’t care about the language barrier. English is not my first language either and even I know that on the topic of rape, get a fucking dictionary or you could be misinterpreted.
since many of his fans think of him as more than just a “hot guy” most of your argument is invalid. AND being “feminist” doesn’t have to mean being a cunt who doesn’t care about the feelings of men, either. “agreeing with him cus he is hot” is kind of fucking rude, to be honest, and shallow, and im neither of those things, so that entire argument is still invalid to me. yes there are people out there that you described perfectly, but still it’s just a movie, rape happens all the time, just cus its in a movie and done by a hot guy doesnt mean its right, whatever, but people need to calm down about if he says he feels sorry for his own character.. watch the film and get in his characters head and you’d know what he’s talking about.
anyways, this discussion i guess is between those who feel strongly against rape and those who see it as just another evil of our disgusting world. whatever.
Dude, he’s an actor, he always has to find a way to get his characters or he should change his job. Next time try to really understand what he is saying not what you think he is saying. All this drama over a movie is pretty stupid.
Wow! Like everyone else has already explained, I thought it was pretty clear that Alex’s comments were him explaining the motivations for his character. Why in the world would an actor ever take the role of a character who does bad things if he or she couldn’t understand how that character ticks? He is obviously not excusing rape or justifying it, he’s just trying to explain what was going through his character’s head at that moment. Even rapists have histories and thoughts. This wasn’t some stranger who raped a woman on a back street. He not only knew the woman, but she was his ex-girlfriend. Trying to understand why someone does something horrible in no way justifies that act. Why don’t you step down off of your moral high horse for a second? I’m not going to crucify an actor for trying to understand his character’s motives. By your reasoning, no actor should ever accept the part of a rapist.
Not only that, but the quote is taken completely out of context. He isn’t justifying the rape, he certainly isn’t justifying what happened after. What he deems sad is Charlie’s mindset, that led to the whole bloody mess. He is not feeling sad for the rapist, he is saying the guy is sad, and obviously wrong in his assumption that this was “love,” when, clearly it wasn’t anything remotely that.
This is a tough topic, and it pushes a lot of buttons. But that’s what movie is doing anyway. The character and his motivations are going to be questioned, and Alex is relating what was going on in the guy’s head. That’s not him excusing it in any way, the whole conversation is about the rape scene. He doesn’t call it anything else, he is not an idiot or an apologist. No one who shot that scene or saw it can possibly qualify it as anything else. What he is explaining is the way his character gets to this point.
At this point I shouldn’t even bother but I’m a little depressed now.
“Why don’t you step down off of your moral high horse for a second?” I could. Or you could get up here and enjoy the view, it’s a nice perspective. None of what you said addresses my point so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to answer to.
In general, the problem remains. You guys all try to explain what he really meant. Fine, you may be right, I never even challenged that. What I don’t understand is why everyone feels the need to attack those who question his words. They were unfortunate at best and could be easily misinterpreted, which is not good. What he says or means or if it was taken out of context is not the point, the point is that we questioned whether calling “it” (whatever he meant by that, I refuse to believe any of you guys can be sure) “sad” was the best choice. I don’t think it was. In my very first reply I gave him the benefit of the doubt and showed that there are much better ways to explain his character and his mindset but apparently none of it matters because when it comes to him, criticism isn’t allowed?
I give up now.

Holy effin’ shit!
THAT is what I call bringing the sexy back. Son of a bitch that is one hunky piece of man meat. My inner fangirl is 75% restored. I’m ready for that questionable True Blood fuckery (I’m looking at you, Ball) and the psychotic hotness that seems to be Straw Dogs. Bring it! *licks screen*

What in fresh hell ….
I’m not a violent person. Mostly. But this fuckery makes me want to hunt down Bitch Boy and beat his ass with a large piece of cheese.
First of all, he looks hot. And I hate him for making me say this because of what he’s carrying over his shoulder. A gym bag you say? Yes but what kind of bag? A pretentious-ass 695$ bag. What? Who? It can’t be! Yes it can.
Look, I understand a boy needs fancy stuff. Well, I really don’t but that’s beside the point. This is a gym bag. You use it to schlepp around your smelly clothes and God knows what else. So … why? WHY??? WHY spend THAT much money on it? It’s not even that awesome! And it makes you look limp. You can work out all you want, the pretentious-ass bag negates the manliness you’re working on so hard. Go stand in the corner, I can’t look at you right now.
Oh right, probably got that shit for free. My mistake. That makes it so much better. And I have no earthly idea who could’ve either given this to him or dragged him to the store. NO idea. …. Come to think of it, who knows if he’s even aware of the price tag on that thing. “Someone” may have just thrown it at him to make him the Mulberry poster boy to go with the Mulberry poster twig he dates.
I need a drink.

Please be gay? Pleeeaase?
I mean, come on. This really screams … nevermind. It’s wishful thinking but please, could you get a boyfriend? Thanks. We wouldn’t have to fight over the Flawless One.
Hell yeah baby! This one too, preferably in combination with Bitch Boy above. But that’s just me.
See, we can absolutely handle the gay. Sometimes we prefer it. Yum.

More of the same fuckery
Oh please, we all knew I wouldn’t be able to resist these shenanigans.
I don’t even know where to begin. The fact that she’s babysitting? That my fav bitch boy is nowhere to be seen? That she looks bombed? That the shoes are fug? Or that, again, she makes my heart flutter despite looking like she has spent several years in a crackhouse?
Let’s instead go for the obvious. The child is hot and I’m a pervy older woman even though I’m not even 30. Come to mama ….

Lesson to all the bitch boys out there. THIS is how you properly eye-fuck the camera. Make no mistake, we love a good camera eye-fuck. This one knows a thing or two about it as well.
*adjusts panties* Shame that as of late, he has somehow - for whatever reason - lost his oomph. He’ll bounce back. I’m assured of this.

Always support the gay
*thud* … Before there were Brad and Nate, there were these two. Sweet Lord I would do nasty things to these boys. I’m assured of this. Have some more.
*wheezes* ‘s too much. *puts up oxygen tent*
