I’m sorry, what?  It’s sad for the rapist?  I hope he meant sad as in pathetic, but that’s still not right.  Abhorrent would be better.  Atrocious.  Horrific.  Something that should never happen.  Those would be better things to say, not that you pity him.  And the lesson is how crazy love can make you.  Because the rapist is a victim of love.  Because the rapist is just so in love.  No, I don’t think so.  I realize he’s your character, but the rapist is not the victim.  He’s not a sympathetic character.  There is never an excuse for rape.

Guys.  If he can’t find a way to sympathize with the character, to rationalize him, to make him seem human, how is he supposed to play him?  This is all fictional and theoretical.  Were there actual people involved, it would be more black and white.

 Oh excuse me, I’m so sorry the topic of rape annoys you (I’ll be using “you” to include everyone who thinks he’s just so dreamy and therefore they know exactly what he meant to say … which …. LMFAO). Don’t read this post then, wouldn’t want to upset anyone.

Couple of things.

1) If you continue using the “this is just a movie” argument, people might start to think you don’t know the connection between pop culture and rape culture. Wouldn’t want that, right?

2) This has become less about what he said (because I do believe he probably, hopefully meant something far less offensive but that’s not the point) and more about the fans’ reaction. You think he’s so dreamy that you don’t question a word he’s saying. That’s just depressing. You can’t just assume he didn’t mean it just because his biceps are impressive. That’s so offensive and anti-feminist I want to puke. If SOMEONE had questioned his words instead of going “Awwwwww”, I’m sure neither aclutteredmind nor moi would have been so pissed. Because that worries me too. That people don’t even read the shit he says even when it’s borderline sexist and definitely unreflected. And just straight-up dumb.

3) And don’t put words in his mouth just because you want to sit on his face either. Hot guys aren’t allowed to say asshole things just because you like the way their t-shirts cling to their moobies. You’re setting back feminism 100 years.

Dude, he’s an actor, he always has to find a way to get his characters or he should change his job. Next time try to really understand what he is saying not what you think he is saying. All this drama over a movie is pretty stupid.

Wow! Like everyone else has already explained, I thought it was pretty clear that Alex’s comments were him explaining the motivations for his character.  Why in the world would an actor ever take the role of a character who does bad things if he or she couldn’t understand how that character ticks?  He is obviously not excusing rape or justifying it, he’s just trying to explain what was going through his character’s head at that moment.  Even rapists have histories and thoughts.  This wasn’t some stranger who raped a woman on a back street. He not only knew the woman, but she was his ex-girlfriend.  Trying to understand why someone does something horrible in no way justifies that act.  Why don’t you step down off of your moral high horse for a second?  I’m not going to crucify an actor for trying to understand his character’s motives. By your reasoning, no actor should ever accept the part of a rapist.

Not only that, but the quote is taken completely out of context. He isn’t justifying the rape, he certainly isn’t justifying what happened after. What he deems sad is Charlie’s mindset, that led to the whole bloody mess. He is not feeling sad for the rapist, he is saying the guy is sad, and obviously wrong in his assumption that this was “love,” when, clearly it wasn’t anything remotely that.

This is a tough topic, and it pushes a lot of buttons. But that’s what movie is doing anyway. The character and his motivations are going to be questioned, and Alex is relating what was going on in the guy’s head. That’s not him excusing it in any way, the whole conversation is about the rape scene. He doesn’t call it anything else, he is not an idiot or an apologist. No one who shot that scene or saw it can possibly qualify it as anything else. What he is explaining is the way his character gets to this point.

 At this point I shouldn’t even bother but I’m a little depressed now.

“Why don’t you step down off of your moral high horse for a second?” I could. Or you could get up here and enjoy the view, it’s a nice perspective. None of what you said addresses my point so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to answer to.

In general, the problem remains. You guys all try to explain what he really meant. Fine, you may be right, I never even challenged that. What I don’t understand is why everyone feels the need to attack those who question his words. They were unfortunate at best and could be easily misinterpreted, which is not good. What he says or means or if it was taken out of context is not the point, the point is that we questioned whether calling “it” (whatever he meant by that, I refuse to believe any of you guys can be sure) “sad” was the best choice. I don’t think it was. In my very first reply I gave him the benefit of the doubt and showed that there are much better ways to explain his character and his mindset but apparently none of it matters because when it comes to him, criticism isn’t allowed?

I give up now.
